The recreational boating business (marine trades) of New York State contribute over 2.3 billion dollars to the NYS economy. Boaters on Long Island generate one third of this revenue, Long Island has almost 186,000 boats. Recreational boating is big business on Long Island with all the associated needs and services listed.
With the rapid growth of boating on Long Island and the increase in propulsion technology driven by the EPA Clean Air Act, there are large shortages of trained personnel in many areas of boating sales, service and maintenance. You could fill one of these positions.
Pay scales and benefit packages have soared due to the shortages of trained personnel. Most Jobs are recession proof. If sales go down, restorations and repowers go up, with service and maintenance always needed. A recent survey of Long Island's marine businesses indicates an immediate need for over 500 trained technicians.
The marine field is open to all ages, male and female, right out of school or for individuals looking to change careers. Many businesses will train their own employees by sending them to manufacturer's training facilities, in house training and educational seminars. Recently, formal educational opportunities have become available on Long Island that could get you started. A Certification in Marine Technology is now available at the Elwood Campus of Wilson Tech. This 12 module program is a 2 year part time program taught on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings. It consists of theory and labs with internships available.
Another program could earn you an associate degree in marine technology with 30 credits toward a Bachelor's Degree. This 2 year full time day program is taught at Kingsborough Community College in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. Kingsborough has a working 36 slip marina and various vessels used as classrooms.
